True, this is only available in Japan for now. In the very near future, they will begin replacing them there with special cup lids made from recycled PET.

This decision was to be expected, given how dissatisfied consumers worldwide were with the replacement of plastic straws with paper ones. And judging by the company's claims of more than three years of development, they began working on this new product shortly after the ban on plastic straws and as soon as it became clear that paper straws weren't a viable replacement.

The new lid is designed for use not only in-store but also for takeout and drive-thru use. It's convenient to drink from, easy to open, yet resistant to accidental opening and leakage during delivery. Furthermore, the design resists the pressure of carbonated drinks, even if the cup is accidentally shaken.

The new lids will premiere in Japan on November 19. The company's regional management says their introduction will usher in a gradual phase-out of paper straws.
