New doesn't necessarily mean completely new; it can also be a cleverly modernized take on something old. And sometimes a fresh look at something old yields great ideas for improvement.

This is what happened at the British company Deliveroo, which held a competition for eco-friendly packaging back in 2024. The goal was to develop an innovative, eco-friendly, and cost-effective design that would prevent liquid spills and maintain product temperature. Notably, the competition was conducted among students from Sheffield Hallam University, and it yielded results.

The competition winners simply improved the existing box, introducing a new sealing system that utilizes additional folds in the cardboard to create a more secure closure. The innovative packaging design was developed without significant additional costs, making it more competitive in the market.

Deliveroo emphasizes that the new packaging is industrially compostable. Plant-based materials were used to create the barrier coating. BioPak was responsible for the actual production of the box.

Companies and restaurants selling takeaway food can now purchase the new packaging on the company's website.

Materials from deliveroo.co.uk were used.
