"Food packaged in food" is how the American company NakedPak describes its innovation. They plan to launch mass production of an edible, dissolvable film for food packaging.

The new film will be made primarily from seaweed. When exposed to boiling water, it dissolves completely, leaving no harmful components behind and without altering the product's flavor. The manufacturer recommends using this film for packaging products such as rice, pasta, instant noodles, frozen foods, and more. The film can be used for primary packaging and is washable. It dissolves only in hot water, and washing in cold or warm water, or even with soap, will not harm it.

When used as food, this film is vegan, gluten-free, and kosher. Its final composition will vary depending on the product being packaged and will be clearly stated on the packaging. Foods in edible film should be stored in a cool, dry place until ready to use. If the film isn't eaten, it decomposes naturally and can even be thrown in the trash.

The company is currently collecting applications for its project on a waiting list. Mass production of products packaged in edible film is expected as early as mid-2026.
