Glitter has long since established a firm place in design and creativity, especially in holiday packaging. But here's the problem: traditional glitter made from small plastic particles will be banned in 2023, and a transition period is underway until it's completely phased out.
All this happens because of the very same microplastics that the tiny glitter particles break down into when they enter the environment. And they inevitably end up there.
The ban exists, and so does the demand for glitter alternatives. This means that supply will eventually emerge. One such alternative has been presented by Futamura. They offer glitter made from their NatureFlex film. It is certified for home composting and is considered biodegradable in soil, freshwater, and seawater. The film is made from wood-based materials and decomposes without leaving any residue in the environment.
Whether the proposed solution will be able to completely replace fine glitter on the market remains to be seen. However, the mere fact that alternative solutions are emerging inspires some optimism.
